Ehambe impressed with Baylor
For someone who is 6-3, 230 pounds and can run, there's a lot to like about Prime Prep outside linebacker Josh Ehambe.
The recent transfer from Mansfield Summit has been picking up heavy interest from Big 12 schools including Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma. The junior day tour began Feb. 2 at Baylor and it continues Saturday at TCU. His lone offer is from SMU. Expect the offers to swell.
While he initially thought TCU and Oklahoma were his early favorites, he witnessed enough of Baylor to convince him that the Bears could be players in his recruitment.
"I really was impressed when I went there,'' Ehambe said. "I had a chance to talk with coach [Jim] Gush and get to know what they want to do on defense and make a lot of plays. I loved it. The things I knew about Baylor before I went there was that they do a good job of putting guys in the NFL. That's what I want to do.''
The Bears have not offered Ehambe, but they will continue to watch and evaluate him. Ehambe said they likely will see him when spring football begins in May. An offer could come before that depending on what the defensive coaches think.
Ehambe played out of position in 2012. When former teammate Bryson Henderson went down with an injury, Ehambe slid from defensive end to defensive tackle. He thought he handled the role well.
But the change in schools could help him settle in with the position he appears to be destined to play, outside linebacker. He's built similarly to Brian Nance. If he were to end up with the Bears, it would be intriguing to see how his transformation evolves. He may have the flexibility to rotate between outside linebacker and defensive end.
For now, the goal is to work on his 40-yard dash. It's been some time since he was last timed. He said he recorded a 4.8 in the ninth grade. He thinks he can get to 4.6 fairly soon.
"If TCU and OU offered, I wouldn't do anything quick,'' Ehambe said. "I want to see what my parents think. If Baylor offers, that would really change things for me. They have a defense where I think I could fit into well. I'll just have to see.''
