And then there was one
And then there was one. On Saturday afternoon when Umass pulled out an unlikely win over Akron, Southern Miss became the only FBS team to remain winless on the year. That was apparently little motivation when they took the field on Saturday night in Dallas against SMU.
They were once again non-competitive in floundering to a 34-6 loss to the Mustangs. With the loss the Eagles sit alone as the only FBS team in the country to be winless. Just 11 months ago Southern Miss was one of only a handful of FBS teams to win 12 games.
With the loss to SMU, the Eagles fell to 0-10, marking the first time in program history that the Eagles have lost 10 games in a season. They surpassed the nine game losing streak for the program previously set in 1976.
The season to season turn around from 12-2 to 0-10 has been history on the college football landscape. Prior to this year no program had ever lost more than eight games following a 12 win season. That is certainly not something that first year head coach Ellis Johnson and his staff should feel good about, and it's likely to get worse, if that is even possible.
The Eagles have two games left on the schedule for this nightmarish season. They welcome UTEP to Hattiesburg this coming weekend before before traveling to Memphis to mercifully end the season on November 24th. Southern Miss won't be favored in either game.
