Fisk throws two hit shut-out in 2-0 win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior right-hander Conor Fisk threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout to lead Southern Miss to a 2-0 Conference USA series-clinching victory over Tulane here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

The Golden Eagles (13-17 overall, 5-4 C-USA) won the final two games of the series over the Green Wave (16-18, 4-5) after losing the opener on Friday.

It was the first shutout of an opponent for Southern Miss since a 1-0 home victory over East Carolina on May 11, 2012. That game also marked the last time the Golden Eagles threw a complete-game shutout when Andrew Pierce defeated the Pirates in that contest.

The Golden Eagles posted a season-low three hits, but got all the runs they needed in the third inning.

Andrew Furr led off the frame for Southern Miss with a walk, before Chase Fowler was hit by a David Napoli pitch. Connor Barron then put down a sacrifice bunt before Travis Creel hit the first pitch from Napoli into the right-centerfield gap to drive home both Furr and Fowler with a double.

Creel ended the day with two of the Eagles' three hits and Furr collected the other.

Fisk fanned three and walked four to go along with his two hits to capture the victory and improve to 3-1 on the season. After giving up a single and a walk to start the sixth, Fisk retired the next 10 batters he faced.

He gave up a one-out walk in the ninth, but got the two final Green Wave batters to fly out to centerfield.

Napoli (3-2) went the distance in a losing cause for the Green Wave allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a pair of midweek contests against New Orleans. Southern Miss and the Privateers play at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday and then return to Hattiesburg for a 6 p.m., contest Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
