More than a dozen programs have extended offers to the talented prospect including Northern Illinois, South Alabama and WKU.
"They're recruiting me the hardest and they already know what they want to do with me," he said.
Southern Miss is recruiting Yancey as an outside linebacker opposed to the defensive end position that several program have him projected. That's just fine with him.
"They want me to play outside linebacker, it's where I really want to play," he said. "You never know, they may see something different, but as long as I am standing up I'm fine."
Yancey has good side to side movement and could slide to middle linebacker with little problem.
He's expecting Southern Miss right the ship under and get back to their winning ways under first year head coach Todd Monken.
"They had an off season last year," he said "It's time to bring it back up."
With every prospect there is something about their preferred program that sets them apart from the rest of the pack and for Yancey it was his relationship with the Southern Miss coaching staff.
"It was really the coaches," he said. "Just talking to them and getting to know them. They're just guys that I want to be around and enjoy talking too."
Over the past few months he has built a strong relationship with Southern Miss receivers coach John Wozniak.
"We talk almost everyday," Yancey said. "He's just a great guy. I'll call him and check up on him and we have great conversations. He's someone I would tell anyone I think he is a great guy and just someone I want to be around."
Wozniak serves has his recruiting coach but he had a chance to spend time with several members of the coaching staff when the Southern Miss staff took part in a camp hosted by Alabama State in June.
