HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Following their 63-35 victory over Navy, Austin Davis and Marquese Wheaton garnered weekly awards from Conference USA.
Davis was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after he threw for 283 yards on 21-of-23 passing with three touchdowns, to go along with 75 yards rushing on 12 carries with a running score on the weekend. It was the senior quarterback's third-straight game of throwing for three touchdowns and his fifth consecutive multi-TD passing contest.
His 91.3 percent passing for the game established a school record. In addition, it was the 10th time in Davis' career that he rushed for at least 50 yards and the Golden Eagles improved to 9-1 in those games. Davis led the Golden Eagles to an 8-for-8 success rate in the red zone which led to all touchdowns for Southern Miss.
It was the second time in his career that he has earned the award, the first following the Golden Eagles 59-41 victory over Houston at home in 2010.
Rivals.com also awarded the senior quarterback its C-USA Player of the Week award for the second time this year. It is the fourth time in his career to receive the honor from the website. He was named the C-USA Player of the Week twice in 2010.
Senior cornerback Marquese Wheaton was also named the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week after his play in Annapolis. The Phoenix, Ariz., native picked up a blocked Navy field goal on the game's opening possession and took it 79 yards for a touchdown. It was his second straight week with a non-offensive touchdown as he notched a 75-yard fumble return against Rice the previous week. Wheaton added a one tackle in the game.
For the season, the Golden Eagles have garnered five C-USA Player of the Week awards from the conference, the most since 2004 when the Black and Gold won nine times.
The Golden Eagles head into their off weekend but return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 22, to host C-USA West division foe SMU for homecoming. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
