HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team returned to practice Tuesday afternoon to prepare for its final home game of the season when they entertain Conference USA West Division rival, UTEP, this Saturday at 7 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles utilized a two-hour practice in full pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility as the team went through their normal rigorous Tuesday workout.
"We backed off on a little of the contact because of the time of the year, but we still did a lot of first-team versus first-team intermittently during practice and it went well," said coach [db]Ellis Johnson[/bd]. "The attitudes were good and the spirit was good (during the workout)."
It will be Senior Day at The Rock this Saturday for 18 Golden Eagles as the Miners make their second-ever visit to Hattiesburg this weekend. UTEP won the only other meeting here, 40-37 in double overtime in 2008, despite 260 yards from the school's all-time leading rusher, Damion Fletcher. That rushing performance by Fletcher was the second-best rushing game in the history of the school.
Southern Miss, though, leads the overall series 3-2 which dates back to the 1954 Sun Bowl and also includes a 1988 Independence Bowl meeting that the Golden Eagles won 38-18.
Tickets still remain for this weekend's contest by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Center weekdays from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
