HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Rivals.com awarded Southern Miss senior quarterback, Austin Davis, its Conference USA Player of the Week award after leading the Golden Eagles to a 30-24 road victory over Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia on Saturday.
It is the third time in his career to receive the honor from the website. He was named the C-USA Player of the Week twice in 2010.
Davis led the Golden Eagles (3-1, 0-1 C-USA) to a touchdown on their first drive and the lead which was relinquished just once in the game. It was also the first time Southern Miss defeated an opponent from a BCS automatic qualifying conference on the road in six tries.
The Meridian, Miss., native threw for 313 yards on 27-of-41 attempts with three touchdown passes against the Cavaliers. Davis' 32 yard toss to receiver Kelvin Bolden was also the fifth-longest play from scrimmage this season for Southern Miss. It was also the 25th time in the school-record holder's career to throw for more than 200 yards.
For the year, Davis has thrown for 991 yards on 89-of-150 (59.3 percent) with seven touchdown passes.
The Golden Eagles return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 1, to host C-USA West division foe Rice in their annual "BLACKOUT" game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
