Eagles add JUCO backer

Southern Miss is looking to build depth on the defensive side of the ball and they need it immediately. They took a big step in the right direction on Wednesday, when Gulf Coast (Perkinston, Miss.) CC line-backer Elijah Parker committed to the Eagles.
Parker will count toward the 2014 signing class, after playing a single season of JUCO ball. He'll have four years to play three on the field for the Eagles.

"During spring training they really started talking to me," he said. "They invited me to the camp. I thought it was more of a visit, but I got to show what I could do..."
Following the camp the coaching staff stepped up with an offer for the talented 6-foot-1, 215-pounder.
"I really loved the atmosphere and the coaches," he said. "Southern Miss is back on the way up and I figure that I better jump on board."
During his freshman campaign at Gulf Coast, he started all but the first two games of the year, notching 36 tackles, two sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles.
He was a full qualifier out of Brandon (Miss.) High and will not be required to graduate to transfer to Southern Miss.
