Eagles avoid trap, defeat Rice 81-78 in OT

HOUSTON - Southern Miss senior Gary Flowers scored 24 points, including six in overtime, to lead Southern Mississippi to an 81-78 victory over Rice on Wednesday night.
Flowers made a layup with about a minute to go in OT to bring the Golden Eagles (13-3, 2-1 Conference USA) within 78-77.

Sai'Quon Stone then hit a jumper to put the Golden Eagles ahead and Flowers made a pair of free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
LaShay Page added 15 points for Southern Mississippi while R.L. Horton and Devonta Newbill scored 11 each.
Connor Frizzelle, who sent the game to overtime on a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in regulation, led the Owls (8-9, 0-3) with 21 points.
Tamir Jackson added 19 points for Rice while Lucas Kuipers scored 13 and Arsalan Kazemi 10.
