Eagles scratch evening practice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In what was supposed to be their first two-a-day practice of fall camp, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles were able to get in just one early morning session on Wednesday as rain darkened the skies over the Joe P. Park Practice Facility in the evening.
The two-hour morning session in full pads was abbreviated as the Golden Eagles expected to suit up again in the evening, but no sooner than 10 minutes after the team hit the field in the evening did lightning and thunder force the squad back inside.

"Weather is unpredictable," said coach Ellis Johnson. "That's one reason we've been going in the morning. It's not always safe, but if you do get [rained out] in the morning, you can move the practice to later in the day."
Johnson and his staff will not let the weather halt their preparations for the upcoming season as the first-year head coach said the team will continue to move on schedule on Thursday morning.
"What we'll hope to do is take the practice we were going to do this evening and do it in the morning," noted Johnson. "Then, we'll take tomorrow morning's practice and get it done in the evening or afternoon - wherever we find a window."
Southern Miss is expected to have three more practice sessions before their first intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, and the Golden Eagle coaching staff is looking to avoid squeezing too many practice sessions in near that date.
