Football Completes Second Full Scrimmage of Fall Camp

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team completed their second full scrimmage and their 17th practice of fall camp Saturday afternoon inside Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"I thought the defense did a great job today through out the scrimmage." Head coach Larry Fedora said. "On the offensive side of the ball there were some good things here and there, but we have to be more consistent."

The quarterback battle between Austin Davis and Martevious Young continued through out the scrimmage. Davis was 20-30 for 144 yards with two touchdown passes and Young was 10-25 for 124 yards with two interceptions. Fedora added that both of Young's interceptions were on fourth down plays in desperation situations. Freshman Bret Jefcoat was three-for-three for 40 yards as well.
Junior transfer Bubba Kirksey led the rushing attack with 55 yards on 20 carries including a touchdown. Damion Fletcher rushed for 46 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown in limited action. Desmond Johnson and V.J. Floyd also scored on the ground in the scrimmage.
Fedora also praised the play of freshman wide receiver DeAndre Brown as he led the team in receiving yards with 82 on four catches, some against the number one defense.
Torris Magee and Josh Barton hauled in the two touchdown catches from Davis while Shawn Nelson led the team in receptions with five for 54 yards on the afternoon.
Defensively, Eddie Willingham and Chico Hunter both had interceptions while Gerald McRath and Terrance Conner both recovered fumbles. McRath returned his fumble for a touchdown.
"We have to keep getting better every day, the tempo was a lot better this scrimmage (than last Saturday) but we were not as consistent as we need to be on every play." Fedora added.
The Golden Eagles will hold three more practices over the next three days to close out fall camp before the start of classes on Wednesday, August 20.
